just 24 hours to stitches out!

Buddy and I are spending a wonderful morning in the front yard. Buddy is enjoying the grass and I’m enjoying the birds and katydids and other insects singing in the trees. The little cardinal family pecking at the feeder and the bossy squirrels coming around to raid it.

If we keep the ace bandages on, Buddy completely ignores his stitches. We just have to make it one more day until the stitches are out. So I’m keeping the Ace bandages around him. But I have to re-wrap him a few times a day. This wrapping thing is clearly a skill!

Buddy's new bowl standI also looked at the post with the video about recovery and tried to feed Buddy standing up day before yesterday. Because he is so big, it is a long way to the floor with his food bowl. He would normally have bent down to eat. But now his one leg has trouble bending down. So I made him a food bowl stand. He liked it very much.

But I did notice last night when he was drinking from his water bowl (still on the floor) that his front leg and back legs were trembling. Could that just be because he has been lying down for the most part for two weeks? When his stitches are out can I start walking him around the block to build up his strength?

I've had dogs and cats since I was 3. Currently my husband and I have 4 dogs and 5 cats. Dogs range from Buddy the 100-pound Golden, to Bella the 60-pound hound to Stubby the 40-pound Chow mix to Precie the overweight 20-pound mystery dog with the face of a Shitzu and the hair of a Yorkie or Schnauzer and the temperament of Attila the Hun! The cats rule indoors, the dogs own the back yard with a sleeping porch in the house at night. Buddy is 10 and in spite of our hopes that he could avoid this Golden trait, has started getting sarcomas and just had his front left leg removed. We have had many pets die over the years - lovingly buried and remembered. But Buddy going to 3 legs is a new world for us. thank you all for helping us in this difficult journey.

  1. BUUUUUUDDDDDDYYYYYY, you are sooooo sweet! You just melt my eart everytime I see your sweet pictures! The gentleness just oozes out of you straight into our hearts!

    Love is dining table! Perfect!

And I love how the two of you are enjoying the gifts that nature is surrounding you with today. Sounds like a touch of Paradise!

As far as trembling..of course I’m no vet…but it’s just muscle reaction from adjusting to standing on three legs and, as you said, not using his muscles much as he recuperates.

Buddy is a well loved pup, that’s for sure!

Look forward to tomorrow’s update and p pictures!

Love to all and enjoy your beautiful day!

  2. Hi Buddy,

Awww, you look so peaceful on the grass. As for your legs and gaining your strength, I saw a video on this site for dog physiotherapy and range of motion exercises. They also discuss strengthening your core. Perhaps the vet has ideas on this or you could watch the video (sorry I can’t find the link). It looks like there are a lot of great ideas on rehab for dogs on this site.

  3. Buddy you sweet wonderful handsome guy.. you will feel so much better with those stitches out!. They get so annoying. Every day gets better from here! It is an excellent idea, raising the bowl, Mom. He has to change his center of balance . It takes time when we go from four to three. Like learning to walk again. After a month I am seeing Jack really getting the “hang” of it better and better! Looking forward to hearing the updates!. You are doing great!! hugs!

  4. Thanks everyone for your encouragement and suggestions. I’ll post later today about Buddy’s adventures getting his stitches out. Just wanted to give you guys a shout back for your very special support of Buddy – and his mommy and daddy!
thanks. It means a whole lot.
