Buddy enjoys the yard

About a week after his surgery, it was a beautiful day so I put an old rug out in the front yard and let him lie out there while I worked on my laptop next to him. Two of the cats decided to come visit him. Sweetpea, the little black and white one started flirting and playing with him. It was a very good day – his red doll, the outdoors, a friend to watch and Mommy sitting close by.

I've had dogs and cats since I was 3. Currently my husband and I have 4 dogs and 5 cats. Dogs range from Buddy the 100-pound Golden, to Bella the 60-pound hound to Stubby the 40-pound Chow mix to Precie the overweight 20-pound mystery dog with the face of a Shitzu and the hair of a Yorkie or Schnauzer and the temperament of Attila the Hun! The cats rule indoors, the dogs own the back yard with a sleeping porch in the house at night. Buddy is 10 and in spite of our hopes that he could avoid this Golden trait, has started getting sarcomas and just had his front left leg removed. We have had many pets die over the years - lovingly buried and remembered. But Buddy going to 3 legs is a new world for us. thank you all for helping us in this difficult journey.

  1. Oh sweet Buddy! You have quite the entourage at your beckon call! Well, maybe not so much the orange cat!

It’s delightful to see y o u enjoying the simple pleasures of just being out in nature with your loved ones. You are thoroughly enjoying yourself and that, my friend, is what this whole amputation thing is about!

You melt my heart sweet Buddy! I think red doll is pretty impressed with you too!

Keep posting these great pictures.and updates. We love this guy!

  2. Yes, this was the day that I finally relaxed and just enjoyed being with him again like in the old days. No anxious watching and worrying every minute. He has still had some anxious moments but that day in the yard we jut relaxed together.

  3. Adorable! That is a perfect way to spend recovery, hanging out just doing not much of anything. He looks very relaxed, you sound like it too!

  4. Mardi,
Buddy looks good! Glad things are going along well. He’s a beautiful boy.

  5. Hi Mardi & Buddy,
I’m new to this site. My cat Mona had her front leg amputated on June 13th and I was curious as to how cats respond differently to amputations than dogs.

I see that Mona and Buddy love the canned food. Mona was put on wet kitten food for the protein and she sure loved it.

I didn’t let Mona outside until the staples and sutures were out 2 weeks after the surgery. That was the moment that I knew I had my Mona back. She sat on the deck in the wind and warm rain for 1.5 hours just looking around and sniffing the air. I think she smelled freedom.

Enjoy your recovery time relaxing with Buddy. Beautiful dog and sweet cats you have there.

  6. Hi Kerren and Mona, how is Mona doing now? Is she chasing squirrels and lizards again?

I probably wouldn’t have let a cat outside until her sutures were removed either. And I only let Buddy out because he was all wrapped up in bandages and I made him lie on the rug! You can make dogs lie down and stay there – you can’t do that with cats!

But it sounds like Mona really enjoyed being outside again too (just like Buddy) when you let her out to enjoy the breeze and wonderful air smells.
