Buddy gets himself into trouble again

Since yesterday was my husband’s day off from work, I left him to watch Buddy while I went to work – a few hours away. Dennis called me at work in the mid-afternoon. Somehow Buddy managed to pull or tear part of his bandage loose. Dennis thought that since Buddy is moving around more that he possibly caught it on some corner of the furniture. I was afraid he had scratched it loose with his back foot.

Dennis wrapped an Ace bandage around it and I called the vet. I told them the bandages had been pulled loose in one place and the stitches were exposed but not damaged. I was in a panic again. Dennis said the Ace wrap would hold the bandages in place until I could get home and get him to the vet today. The vet’s office said that it sounded like it would be ok to wait until today.

So we are back to the vet this morning to get him re-bandaged.

Part II

We went to the vet and the vet assistant took Buddy in to get his bandages fixed. But they asked the vet and she said that his stitches looked really good and he is having them removed in just two days so she thought we could just leave the bandages off. Hurray!

So I brought him home and brought the other dogs into the living room with us. While I worked around on stuff the dogs napped or watched me…….. until…..

I looked over and Buddy was not only licking at his stitches, he was trying to chew them out!!! So I went right upstairs and got the two Ace Bandages and wrapped him up again. As long as he is wrapped up he isn’t messing with it. See my very bad wrap jobĀ  below. I’ll have to probably re-wrap him several times before Thursday.

I've had dogs and cats since I was 3. Currently my husband and I have 4 dogs and 5 cats. Dogs range from Buddy the 100-pound Golden, to Bella the 60-pound hound to Stubby the 40-pound Chow mix to Precie the overweight 20-pound mystery dog with the face of a Shitzu and the hair of a Yorkie or Schnauzer and the temperament of Attila the Hun! The cats rule indoors, the dogs own the back yard with a sleeping porch in the house at night. Buddy is 10 and in spite of our hopes that he could avoid this Golden trait, has started getting sarcomas and just had his front left leg removed. We have had many pets die over the years - lovingly buried and remembered. But Buddy going to 3 legs is a new world for us. thank you all for helping us in this difficult journey.

  1. Cooper did this to me last Friday, I left him alone and he tore at his bandage. He actually chewed or licked his stitches, they were swollen, red and hanging skin. I re bandaged him, waited two days and it went back to normal. I use the compression type bandage all the time so that may have helped, and where it sticks to itself he can’t normally get at it. Now he wears his cone when I have to leave him alone. Is Buddy getting his stitches out this week? Cooper should be on Thursday or Friday

  2. Yes Arlene, the stitches come out Thursday so we just have to make it until then! I added a “part II” to my post above. This is such a roller-coaster of anxiety and relief and anxiety again.

I really hope that when his stitches come out we don’t have any further worries……. except of course the cancer coming out again.

  3. BUDDY!!!! You are one craaaaaazy pooch!! You must really like going to the vet!!

You leave those stitches alone! Thursday is almost here!!! Oh, that’s right, you’re living in the present and don’t care what a “Thursday” is!!!

At least we get to see more pictures of you this way! You are just sooooo sweet looking!! I bet the cat pulled your bandage off and tried to blame you!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your banner at the top of your blog!! Adorable!

    Sending love and hugs!

Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

  4. Gotta love that Buddy and his toys!

My cat Mona had her leg amputated 5 weeks ago and after reading the dog blogs I realize how easy Mona’s amputation and recovery was in comparison. The worst was when she escaped from the house for 26 hours 3 days after surgery. And the best part was when she got the staples and sutures out and I let her sit outside on the deck where she enjoyed the wind and warm rain.

I hope you and Buddy can enjoy the outdoors when he gets the stitches out. It’ll be another step closer to freedom!

  5. Sally, my husband blames everything on the cats, I’m sure Buddy can do it as well!

Mona, I think the smaller the animal the easier it is to manage them. After all for small dogs and cats you can just pick them up and move them if they don’t do what you ask them. You’ve got to have the cooperation of big dogs!

Oh I can’t imagine how frantic you were when you found your Mona had escaped and was gone for over a day! That’s the difficult thing about cats, they can just run off and hide. Dogs at least have separation anxiety and come to you. How is she doing now 5 weeks post-surgery? Is she back to her old self?

  6. Cooper seems determined to chew and lick the stitches, I think even with stitches coming out tomorrow I will still keep him bandaged for a few days. buddy is looking awesome at the vet!!

  7. Hi Mardi,

Mona is doing great with her recovery. I noticed she struggles a bit when she gets up really fast – she usually falls over or spins around and around. I’m not sure what that’s about, maybe just trying to get her balance. She can jump up very high but I’m concerned that she just about does a face plant when jumping down. I think her remaining front leg may be taking a bit of a pounding.

I saw on another thread that Buddy enjoyed time outside today and gets the stitches out tomorrow. Yeah Buddy!

  8. Yes Mona, managing a cat is probably next to impossible. I hope she begins to moderate her adventures on her own maybe to give her other little front paw a rest.
